STERLING SILVER & FASHION JEWELLERY |

|
To ensure that your silver jewellery always looks its best and gives you pleasure for years to come, care should be taken to preserve its fine qualities. Sterling silver can become a little tarnished if exposed to the air for long periods, due to the reaction of oxygen with the copper alloy. A salty atmosphere can speed up the process somewhat, too. Having said that, generally the level of tarnish is minimal and nowadays some jewellery is made from silver containing germanium instead of copper which reduces the tarnish even further.
As always, prevention is better than cure, so when not being worn, it is advisable to store the item in its original packaging. Generally, little else is required other than the occasional very gentle buff with a 'silver cloth' which is impregnated with a non abrasive silver cleaner. Should your item of jewellery
become more heavily tarnished, an application of a long term
silver polish with a very soft cloth should be sufficient, or try
one of the silver dips on the market with a quick polish
afterwards. The best approach though, is to aim for a light polish
now and again, and wearing it often.
