The Cross symbol holds a special place in the Armenian Church, drawing together fundamental aspects of the Armenian religion.
A particular feature of Armenian Crosses is the triple loop at the corner tip of each of the limbs. These are representative of Suns, bringing in the ‘light of Christianity’ to the world, the eight corners themselves being the eight points of the compass. The three loops, in addition, denote the Trinity or ‘Three in One’ concept.
The four limbs of Armenian Crosses signify the four corners of the world, which are illuminated by rays of light emanating from the centre or ‘eye’.
To the Armenians, a cross is seen as a demonstration of eternal life. To emphasise this belief the patterns on their crosses often form unbroken lines, similar to the many examples of Celtic Knots we see today.
